There is no reason why your animals should not have as good a holiday as you do. In this part of Shropshire we are very fortunate in that we have some excellent Boarding Kennels and Catteries but you do need to book well in advance as they tend to be busy throughout the year. Boarding Kennels and Catteries are Licensed by Local Authorities under the Boarding Establishments Act, they will display a certificate detailing the maximum number of animals that can stay overnight on the premises. Proprietors have to abide by strict rules and have to make sure that somebody is present on the premises at all times when animals are boarded. Boarding Kennels welcome visitors at reasonable times, they are proud of the businesses they run and will show you where your animals are going to be for their holidays. Some Kennels spend a great deal of time with the dogs and take them for walks during the course of the day, others have enclosed exercise areas where your dog can safely run free. Dogs and Cats that go into kennels must be vaccinated every twelve months so do not forget to take your certificates with you. There is no direct contact between the animals at the kennels but because dogs will come from different areas and there will be some that tend to bark from time to time. It is one of the places where Kennel Cough can spread. Because of this dogs must have Nobivac KC the Kennel Cough vaccine at least five days before their visit. Remember the immunity from this vaccine is only temporary so should be repeated every six months. We also advise that any animals that go to Kennels are protected by Frontline for the duration of their stay. The accommodation is kept very clean, but because of the numbers of animals that pass through their doors there is a small risk that your pet could bring home fleas after their stay so it is better to be aware of this. Do not worry if your cat is not normally vaccinated against Leukaemia. There will be no direct contact between animals from different households during their stay so no opportunities for this virus to be transmitted to your pet.If you have any concerns about the way your pet has been looked after in Kennels have a word with the Kennel Owner. If you feel that it is not possible to resolve your differences then it is for the Local Authority and their Inspectors to investigate your complaint. The people to write to in this area are either The Licensing Officer, South Shropshire District Council. Stone House Corve Street, Ludlow SY8 1DG for South Shropshire or The Licensing Officer, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, Oakley Manor, Belle Vue Road, Shrewsbury SY3 7NW for premises covered by that Local Authority. The Kennels and Catteries that we recommend give your animals individual attention and are able to cope with their specific dietary and medical needs. Make sure you have plenty of tablets for the stay and take any prescription diets clearly labeled so that things can be done in the same way as they are at home.
